Top 7 Free Tools Every New Entrepreneur & Small Business Needs

When you first start out as an entrepreneur or you take the plunge and start a small business there is a lot to think about and it can be quite daunting. Where do you start? What will you need? What tools will help you get started? You probably won’t have the finances to buy all of the best software or tools so here are some free options to get you started.

1.    Asana for project management.

You can have up to 15 team members with the free version of Asana so this is a great tool. You can manage your projects, set tasks for team members and communicate directly on Asana. This is a terrific tool to help you keep on top of all of you tasks and projects.

2.    Wave for invoicing and accounts management.

There are a lot of cloud based accounting systems available but when you are starting out you might want to look at using Wave which is free and can handle all of your invoicing needs when you are getting started. Wave has functions like uploading photos of receipts directly from your phone into the accounting software. If you’re not ready to take the next step to a larger and costly accounting software then this is a great option.

3.    Hootsuite for managing your social media posts.

There is a free version of this program that can help you manage 3 social media accounts, schedule your social media posts for later, basic analytics reports and the ability to shorten any URL. It's a great starting point for managing social media.

4.    Dropbox for online file storage.

Dropbox is a cloud based program that can be used to share large files with clients, store larger files in the cloud so that they are safe, secure and not taking up space on your hard drive. It is simple to use and acts just like another folder on your computer to save documents in. The Dropbox basic account is free and starts with 2 GB of free space. You can also earn up to 16GB of additional space without too much effort.

5.    MailChimp for email marketing. 

With MailChimp you can design your newsletters using the easy templates that are available. Keep all of your customer details in one place and is a great email marketing program for sending out regular emails or newsletters. You can send 12,000 emails to 2,000 subscribers every month for free.

6.    Canva for your graphic design needs.

Canva is free and easy to use and is a great tool for non-graphic designers. You can create a multitude of graphics including your social media header, invitations, flyers, letterhead, social media ads and other marketing material.

7.    LastPass for keeping you passwords safe.

LastPass will automatically log you into all your programs and can also generate a new lengthy password for you. It is a secure way to keep all of your passwords safe and is free to use.
